Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing uses artificial intelligence to
design a lesson customized for your particular skills and
problems!

PROBLEM: Transposition errors
REMEDY: Rhythmic typing
FOCUS: Slow down for accuracy.

You are making what are called "transposition" errors,
for example, typing "dxetrous" when you mean
"dextrous." You need to slow down, so type in time
with the metronome, and try for 100% accuracy!

Before each lesson, Mavis uses this chalkboard to explain what is going
to happen.

The tallest self-supporting tower (as
opposed to a guyed mast) is the $44 million
CN Tower in Metro Centre, Toronto, Ontario,
Canada. It rises to 1,822 ft. 1 in.
Excavation began Feb. 12, 1973, for the
145,000 ton structure of reinforced, lost-
tensioned concrete, and it was "topped-out"
Apr. 2, 1975.

The Classroom, which you see here, is just one of Mavis'
three main learning centers. Here is where you will be
introduced to new typing concepts.
^message 100 220 412 1 3
The lesson appears on the
screen; the text you type appears directly below it in
bold text.
^message 260 100 400 1 4
Mavis has a wide range of sources for her lessons; from
problem words to fiction to The Guinness Book of World Records!
^message 170 170 342 1 3
"Guide Hands" show you the correct fingering for each key
that you type.

Next, let's look at the Workshop...

The longest pleasure pier is
Southend Pier at Southend-
on-Sea in Essex, England.
It is 1.34 miles in length,
and was first opened in Aug.
1889, with final extensions
made in 1929.
^message 10 80 180 3 5
Mavis' second learning center is the Workshop. This is where
you will practice the new skills you are learning.
^message 300 120 410 0 3
A metronome helps you learn to type in rhythm...
^message 100 100 210 0 5
These three meters constantly give you feedback about
your Accuracy (A), Speed (S), and Completion (C).
^message 300 40 410 0 4
Some lessons have time limits. The clock shows you how much
time you've used.
^message 100 80 412 3 5
And when you're bored with regular lessons...

The largest maze is Il Labirinto at Villa Pisani,
Stra, Italy with 4 mi. of paths. Napoleon was "lost"
in it in 1807. The oldest dateable representation
of a labyrinth is that on a clay tablet from Pylos,
Greece for c. 1200 BC.

We learn best when learning is fun, so
Mavis offers a third learning center: the
Arcade!
^message 100 100 412 0 6
In the racing game, you are behind the wheel of a typing racer. The faster
you type, the faster your car goes.
^message 100 135 412 0 3
Just type the text you see here in the sky!
^message 200 100 400 0 3
Your are challenged by another car -- type faster to keep
your opponent in your rear-view mirror!
^message 180 250 332 0 2
A speedometer constantly shows you your typing speed.

# 2. Introduction
^message 100 80 412 2 5
Mavis teaches the 10-key pad in the same way she
teaches typing, using the chalkboard to help explain
what will come next.

In the checkout game, you'll find yourself in a
grocery store. Your job is to double-check the
prices of a basketful of groceries by keying
them in exactly as the scanner displays them.
# 7. Price display location
^message 172 270 348 2 3
After each grocery has been scanned, its
price appears here.
# 8. Correct play
#^message 288 112 488 1 5

you're correct, the grocery will stack
itself neatly into the bag.

^message 100 80 412 4 4
Now let's look at graphs...
^graphs
^message 100 80 412 3 5
Any time you want, you can display any one of over 20
graphs, each showing one aspect of how your typing is
improving.
^message 120 280 392 0 4
On the lower half of the screen, you can see how you have
been doing today...
^message 120 40 392 0 4
...while on the upper half, you can see your progress for as
long as you have been taking lessons!
